The purity ring is a piece of jewelry that is worn by choice by several youngsters. It is meant to symbolize a vow of abstinence till the time of marriage. There is a school of thought that says that these purity rings were made in the 1990s by Christian groups that wanted to promote celibacy till marriage. However, a little in depth research has shown that these rings go back even further to when women would enter nun-hood. The ring was believed to symbolize a union with Christ. It also meant that the ring would stand for celibacy of the nun for a life time. Today however, once married, people choose to discontinue wearing the ring. Others simply exchange it with partners on their wedding nights.
Purity rings are worn primarily by women although there are a few men too who opt to wear it. At the beginning of the decade, the Jonas brothers made a huge splash in the news with all of them wearing these rings. In fact, there are a number of Christian artistes who even today sport these rings in they are not married.
In some cases there may be a few ceremonial gestures involved in wearing the ring. It could involve taking a pledge before God and the family to stay away from sexual intercourse till the time one is married. There are also what is known as purity balls that are largely father and daughter events. This is where a father will gift the purity ring to his daughter. With time, it is not only the ring that is accepted as a sign of purity, there are other pieces of jewelry such as a bracelet or even a chastity necklace that is accepted as the equivalent.
Prices vary a bit on the purity rings. There are cheap rings and even those made in silver that are rather inexpensive. However those made of precious metals and designed can be on the higher side. If you as a parent want to invest in an expensive ring, then take into consideration the choices of your child. Also look into the durability of the ring. Inexpensive rings stay good for up to 5 years.
